Jwasuyeong Fortress Site (Busan Metropolitan City Monument No. 8)

Gyeongsang Jwasuyeong (The headquarters of Gyeongsangjwa-do Naval Force Commander) was originally located in Busan Port in Dongrae-hyeon, and it was relocated to Gaeunpo in Ulsan, Haeunpo (Suyeon-dong) in Dongrae and Gammanipo (Gamman 1-dong) later on. In the reign of King Hyojong (1652) during the Joseon Dynasty, it was once again moved to Suyeong-dong. The Gyeongsang Jwasuyeong existed for 243 years before being abolished through reform of a military system in the 32nd year of King Gojong (1895) to be incorporated into Dongraebu.
Jwasuyeong Fortress consists of four gates including East Gate (Yeongil Gate), West Gate (Hoso Gate), South Gate (Jujak Gate) and North Gate (Gongjin Gate), and each gate is equipped with a gate tower, and a drum was played at a designated time to open or close the gate. As mentioned above, Gyeongsang Jwasuyeong was historically very important as a strategic point that defended the southeastern coast of the Korean peninsula. The original appearance of Jwasuyeong Fortress was mostly destroyed after it went through Japanese colonial rule and urbanization after liberation of Korea from Japan, and today, only some of ruins remain centering on Suyeong Sajeok Park in Suyeong-dong.
