Altar of the 25 Heroes (Busan Metropolitan City Monument No. 12)

If you go 50 meters in the direction of Yeonsan-dong along Yeonsan-ro (Local Road No. 28) from Suyeong Crossroads before turning to the right, you would come across Altar of the 25 Heroes 400 meters away along the right hand side of the road. (Entry of Suyeong Sajeok Park)
As Japan invaded Korea in 1952, Gyeongsang Jwasusa Hong Park fled abandoning Suyeong Fortress without fighting against the enemy forces, and the Japanese invading Suyeong were stationed here to loot and murder women and residents. Burned with righteous indignation, local residents risked their lives to engage in a guerilla war against the Japanese invaders for 7 years.

In order to honor the resistance, Dongraebusa An-nul Lee discovered 25 war heroes in 17 years to exempt their descendants from military duty and had a sign that read “War Hero” attached to their house to honor their heroic acts. In 1853 (the 4th year of King Cheoljong), Gyeongsang Jwasusa In-sik Jang erected a stone monument for the 25 war heroes near Suyeong Fortress Gate and built the Altar of the 25 Heroes in front of it to hold a memorial service every spring and fall.
In an effort to honor their heroism, Busan Metropolitan City erected a stone monument for 25 war heroes in three memorial stone sites battered by rain and wind and installed an outer three-door gate and Korean-style wall for renovation in December 1974. However, the existing altar established in a low swampy place has poor drainage for topographic reasons causing an environment where trees are not well grown, and the Stone Monument for 25 war heroes were installed in the open air making it difficult to perform a sacrificial rite. Finding it regrettable, senior community leaders made a project plan in September 1999 and started construction on May 10, 2000 before completing it in March 2001 by introducing a shrine (56.1 m2), an inner three-door gate (10.89m2), a management office (19.8m2) and a parking lot in front of the altar in addition to renovation, repair and maintenance of walls.

The altar was named Uiyongsa meaning a shrine for spirit tablets for the 25 war heroes, the inner three-door gate Yeonghwa Gate meaning remembrance for a long time, the outer three-door gate Jonseong Gate meaning preservation of sincerity and the management office Jeonsadang meaning maintenance of the shrine and a place of ritual, and they were indicated on signboards.
At the end of September according to a lunar calendar, a ritual is performed under the supervision of Suyeong Folklore Conservation Association.
