Suyeong Nongcheong Nori (Busan Metropolitan City-Designated Intangible Cultural Asset No. 2)

Residents of Suyeong who were engaged in agriculture for generations installed Nongcheong, an agricultural cooperative organization aimed to systematically and efficiently make cooperation in farming 150 years ago. Nongcheong is believed to originate from Duje in the era of the Three Hans, and Nongcheong organization is not confined to Suyeong and Suyeong Nongcheong continued to exist until 1960s.

Suyeong Nongcheong Nori reflects a process of farming, particularly rice cultivation. Nongyos (farmer’s songs) such as ‘Grass Song’, ‘Spading Sound’, ‘Pulling Out of Seedling,’ ‘Rice Planting,’ ‘Weeding’ and ‘Threshing Sound’ play a central role, and exciting drum sound is added to ‘Barley Threshing’ and ‘Bullfight.’ As folk entertainment expressing a simple life led by farmers who relieve their fatigue through dance, Nongcheong was designated as an intangible cultural asset by Busan Metropolitan City on February 18, 1972 upon its disappearance, and since then it has been preserved by Suyeong Folklore Conservation Association.
It consists of ‘Grass Cutting Sound,’ ‘Spading Sound,’ ‘Sound of Pulling Out of Seedling,’ ‘Sound of Rice Planting,’ ‘Flailing Sound,’ ‘Weeding Sound,’ ‘Bullfight’ and ‘Drum Sound.’
Regular performance is presented in Play Court in Suyeong Folk Arts Center very June.
