Shrine of General An Yong-bok

General An Yong-bok who came from Suyeong in Dongrae in the reign of King Sukjong during the Joseon Dynasty was a soldier affiliated with Neungnogun (rowing soldiers’ unit) of Jwasuyeong Naval Forces. He played an important role in defeating Japanese forces invading Ulreung-do Island and Dok-do Island in the east sea twice in 1693 (19th year of King Sukjong) and 1696 (22nd year of King Sukjong) before going to Japan to have the Japanese confirm that Dokdo Island belongs to the Joseon Dynasty.
In order to honor his accomplishments, General An Yong-bok Memorial Society erected General An Yong-bok’s Loyalty Tower in Suyeong Sajeok Park on Oct. 30, 1967.
Since the loyalty tower was considered to be so small compared to his great achievements, a shrine (26.4m2) and a statue were established at the southern end of Suyeong Sajeok Park and the existing tower was relocated through a project initiated in area covering 1,320 m2 on July 31, 2000. The project was completed on March 26, 2001, and General An Yong-bok Memorial Society named his shrine as Sugangsa meaning defense of Dokdo Island, and it was indicated on a signboard.
A ritual is performed under the supervision of General An Yong-bok Memorial Society at 12 p.m. on April 18 every year.
