Sacred Place for the Martyred in Suyeong Jangdaegol Village

Jangdaegol Village in Suyeong is a place where Catholics were martyred in the reign of King Gojong during the Joseon Dynasty. Catholics who had been hidden were arrested by the police tipped by Geun-gi Park before being decapitated. As a result, eight people including Jeong-sik Lee, a school president, his son Gwan-bok Lee, his daughter-in-law So-sa Park and his nephew Sam-geun Lee as well as Weol-ju Lee, Jae-hyeon Yang, So-sa Ok and Jang-deuk Cha were martyred.
On July 17, 1977, Father Peter, a Catholic priest with Gwangan Catholic Church, discovered 8 rectangular stones, roof tile pieces and coins. Their remains are currently placed in Oryundae (San 15-1, Bugok-dong, Geumjeong-gu, Busan), and a monument was erected by Gwangan Catholic Church on September 30, 1988. The monument is 3.6m in height and 2m in diameter.
